Belmont is my hometown. I grew up on Marlboro Street in a three-family home owned by my grandparents. I attended Wellington Elementary School, Chenery Middle School, and Belmont High School. My parents made many sacrifices over the years to remain in Belmont to raise our family, largely because of the strength of our public schools. Belmont’s strong public school system was and remains an equalizer for students of all backgrounds to realize their potential and become the very best versions of themselves. I can say without reservation that this has been the case for me.
After high school, I attended Boston University and Boston College Law School. I pursued a career in law as a way to combine my interests in problem-solving and engaging with people. I have now been practicing for more than twenty years, principally in the areas of bankruptcy and financial restructuring. Notwithstanding my work with distressed companies and transactions, I consider myself an optimist and I believe that anything is possible for those who are willing to plan effectively, work hard, and use their resources wisely.
I am married to Guy Zuccarello Jr., also a Belmont native, and we became Belmont homeowners in 2003. We believe, just as our parents did, that Belmont is the ideal place to raise a family. We became part of a wonderful community in the Burbank school district and now live on Elizabeth Road with our two children. Our son is a 2021 graduate of Belmont High School and a current student at Oberlin Conservatory studying jazz composition and jazz trombone performance and our daughter is a freshman at Belmont High School.
During my time here as a parent, I have held leadership roles in Belmont Girl Scouts, Parents of Music Students (POMS), and with parent-teacher organizations at both Burbank and Chenery Middle School. I am most proud of my work as the head of the Belmont Girl Scouts service unit for five years and as a troop leader for nearly nine years. Belmont Girl Scouts has grown into a group of more than 300 girls who are learning to “take the lead” in their communities and who inspire me every day. I am very much invested in Belmont and committed to seeing our public school system thrive for these girls and every other student in our community.
Although I’ve lived here for a very long time, I decided to run for School Committee now because Belmont faces unprecedented fiscal challenges that require thoughtful, creative solutions. In order to provide our kids with the very best experience that our public schools can offer them, we need to carefully consider how to maximize the impact of our available dollars. My legal background and experience in financial analysis and negotiation will complement the skills and abilities of the School Committee’s current members to do this effectively. I am familiar with financial documents of all kinds – including budgets, financial statements, and projections. I am adept at putting together these documents and taking them apart. I know how to ask the right questions and make appropriate recommendations to save costs when possible. I know how to advocate for a desired outcome and build consensus. If elected, I will make an instant impact to achieve the School Committee’s identified goals and priorities for the immediate future and beyond.
Belmont’s fine public schools provided me with the strong foundation I needed to become a first-generation professional. I am running for School Committee to ensure that every student has the same opportunity to develop and thrive here. Although we have work to do as a community to make this our future, I am committed to putting in the time and energy to make it happen.
I thank you in advance for your interest in my candidacy and I look forward to getting to know you during the course of my campaign. I hope to have your support on April 4th.
